Barbiecore:
Inside the pink trend
The making of Barbie
The first Barbie doll was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler. Ruth recognized that at the time the market was full of baby dolls which only allowed girls imagine themselves as their mothers. This is the reason why Ruth decided to invent a doll that would take different roles and could teach girls (and her own daughter) that they have the choice to be anything that they want in the future. Barbie's design was modeled after the Bild Lilli doll, which was initially aiming to an older audience, although later on kids enjoyed playing with her. Lastly, Barbie over the last 60 years has taken over 250 different occupations, from princess to president to astronaut.

Barbie's influence in pop culture
The Barbiecore aesthetic has heavily influenced pop culture. In the cinema world the Barbie aesthetic appears in the costumes of many films like Clueless, Mean Girls and Legally Blonde. In these films the leading female characters wear girly clothes mostly in pink. Moreover, many celebrities such as Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Avril Lavigne, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Finally, the trend has overtaken both the fast fashion and high fashion world. For example, Pierpaolo Piccioli's 2022 collection for Valentino had all-pink outfits. The doll's influence can be easily noticed in Jeremy Scott's Spring/Summer 2015 collection for Moschino.
