 Anna Wintour:

the most influential woman in the fashion world

Dame Anna Wintour born in 3 November 1949 in mostly known for her involvement in the fashion world. Her interest in fashion started at a young age, by watching Ready Steady Go! (the TV show) ad reading the magazine Seventeen. Famous for her "cold" personality as portrayed in the movie The Devil wears Prada, now she is the head of the Vogue magazine.

From Journalism to Fashion

Her involvement with fashion started at an early age. Winter states that her father talked her into fashion, by finding her a job at a boutique at the age of 15 years old. In 1970 with the start of Harper's & Queen magazine she was hired as an editorial assistant. A few years later she decided to move to New York and in 1975 she got the job as a junior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar magazine, but due to her fast forward thinking shortly after, she was fired from the position. After some time off of working she decided to work at Savvy and New York, but Wintour was aiming at something bigger. Her dream has always been working at Vogue. Finally in 1983 she got the first position of the creative director in Vogue magazine, while 2 years later got her first editorship and nickname "nuclear Wintour", because she used her power as much as she could, in order to improve the magazine and made more changes than previous editors.

First Cover

Anna Winters first cover for Vogue has been described as revolution in the fashion world and is perhaps the most known cover she has ever done. The model was Michaela Bercu and despite what she was used to wear at photoshoots, this time she was wearing a bejeweled jacket by Christine LaCroix, with an estimated cost of $10,000, paired with a $50 pair of jeans. Wintour's vision was to mix ready to wear with high fashion clothing. The outfit was casual and natural something not preferred by editors at the time. Actually, this was the first time that a model on the cover of Vogue was wearing jeans. Lastly, this revolutionary photo had been taken by photographer Peter Lindbergh.

The Devil wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada is a book written at 2003 by Loren Weisberger that was later on made into a movie.  Weisberger was an assistant at Vogue who wrote about her fictionalized experience of working there. The lead character was played by Meryl Streep and was portraying a demanding boss in the position of editor in chief at a fashion magazine, describing Anna Wintour's life. The movie came out at 2006 with Anna Wintour herself on attending the premiere, while wearing a Prada outfit. The film was among the most successful ones in 2006 and received positive reviews from the audience.

Charity Work

Apart from working at Vogue Wintour has been involved with charity work. Specifically, over the years she has raised over 50 million dollars for the costume Institute by preparing every year the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Moreover, she has raised over 10 million since 1990 for AIDS charities. Lastly, she started the CFDA Vogue Fund in order to support, help and mentor young designers trying to make it into the fashion world.

Anna Wintour is a very influential person in fashion. Many things have been said about her character, while her stuff has claimed that she is not easy to befriend. Furthermore, others have protested against her for wearing fur. On the other hand, Wintour has helped the careers of many well-known designers like Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen. Nowadays, she doesn't write much for Vogue, although she does update the monthly editor's letter.
